영어 에세이 쓰는법 4편 - 주제문 만들기(Thesis Statement)

 

주제문(Thesis Statement)는 이 글에서 말하고자 하는 의도를 (announcement of your intent, statement of fact) 쓰는 것 입니다. 

 

“Tuberculosis is highly contagious”

 

 전염성이 높아서 위험하다라는 문장은 주제문이 되지 못합니다. 위험하고 전염성이 높은데 그런데 뭐? 라는 반응을 이끌게 되죠. 독자들은 무엇을 말하려고 하는지 알 수가 없게 됩니다. 

 

The continuing threat of tuberculosis, particularly in the inner cities, suggests it is necessary to frequently test high- risk populations.”

 

하지만 다음과 같이 문장을 만든다면...

 

 " 도시속에서의 지속적인 결핵의 위협은 고위험군의 사람들은 지속적으로 테스트를 해야할 필요성을 보여준다"

 

이 문장은 어떻죠? 이 문장을 읽으니 이 에세이의 내용이 무슨 내용일지 확실하지 않나요? 영어 논문의 주제(Thesis)를 확실히 해야만 그 에세이의 방향을 잡는 것과 마찬가지 입니다. 이 주제를 던졌다면 도입에서는 결핵의 위협을 나타내는 자료를 설명 할 수 있겠지요? 그리고 본론에는 나아가서 테스트를 했더니 고위험군의 사람들의 치명률을 낮출 수 있었고, 더 효율적인 테스트를 하는 방법까지 제안한다면 더 좋은 페이퍼가 되겠죠?

예시 1). 

 

Hybrid Cars : Pro and Con 하이브리드 차의 장점과 단점

 

이건 주제문일까요? 주제라고 할 수 있지만, 논점이 없습니다. (X)

 

예시 2).

 

Hybrid cars are more energy efficient than cars with standard gasoline engines.

 

그럼 이것은요? " 하이브리드 자동차가 일반 자동차보다 에너지 효율에 앞서 있다. " 이 내용은 사실을 나타내는 것이지만, 근데 뭐 어쩌

 

라고? 라는 답변이 나오게 됩니다.  

 

" 근데 뭐 어쩌라고 ?"라는 반응을 나오게 하는 문장은 주제문이 될 수 없다는 것 입니다. (X)

 

예시 3).

 

Although hybrid cars could decrease our country’s dependence on foreign oil, they have disadvantages. 

 

 하이브리드 자동차가 국가의 기름 의존도를 줄이는 것에 도움이 될 수 있지만, 단점을 수반 한다.

 

위 내용은 어떤가요? 위와 같은 반응이 나오지 않겠죠? 어떤 단점이 있는지가 궁금할 것 입니다.  이렇게 주제문은 확실한 의도가

 

있어야한다는 것 입니다.  (O)

 

주제문은 언제나 바뀔 수 있다는것도 염두해주세요. 내용을 쓰다보면 더 강력한 주제문을 만들 수 있는 아이디어가 떠오를지 모르니까

 

요. 주제문은 다시 바꿔도 됩니다. 다만 본론과 결론이 일치해야겠지요?

 

강력한 주제문의 특징?

 

1. An effective thesis statement clearly expresses your essay’s main idea.

 

첫번째 메인 아이디어를 확실히 표현하고 있다는 것 입니다. 

 

Grant and Lee fought during Civil War in America because they thought differently about the future of America.

 

위 처럼 주제문의 아이디어를 대충 브레인 스톰 했다면 아래와 같이 문장을 더 확실히 표현 해보도록 합니다. 

 

Grant and Lee were two strong men, these oddly different generals, and they respresented the strenghts of two conflicting currents that, through them, had come into final collison. 

 

=> 미국의 시민전쟁에서 싸웠던 grant 와 Lee는 미국의 미래에 대한 생각이 달랐습니다.  

=> grant 와  Lee는 두 큰 세력을 대표하는 생각이 다른 지도자였으며 마침내 부딪히게 되었습니다. 

 

더 주제문을 확실하게 바꿨습니다. 이렇게 표현을 더 상세하게 하면 의도하고자 하는 바를 확실히 더 전달 할 수 있겠죠. 두 세력에 대한

 

설명과 그 배경 그리고 전쟁에 대한 내용까지 나올 것이라는 것을 독자들은 짐작 할 수 있습니다. 

 

 

2. An effective thesis statement communicates your essay’s purpose.

 

주제문은 당신의 생각을 확실히 표현하고 있습니다. Expressive하고 informative 하고 pursuasive 합니다.

 

The city's homeless families live in heartbreaking surroundings. The plight of the homeless has become so serious that is it a major priorty for many city governments. The best way to address the problems of the homeless is to renovate abandoned city buildings to create sutiable housing for homeless families.  

 

홈리스가 처한상황을 감정적으로 표현을 하고, 도시 정부의 우려를 자아내고 있다는 정보 전달과, 사용되지 않는 도시 건물들을 이용해서 홈리스들을 도울 수 있다는 내용까지 설득력이 있는 주제문 입니다. 

 

3. An effective thesis statement is clearly worded. 

그리고 My thesis is that , The thesis of this paper 같이 필요없는 문장은 적지 말아주세요. 강력한 주제문은 읽기만 하면 그게 주제문이라는 것을 알수가 있습니다.

Although the facilities and learning environment may not be as good as four year college or university, A community college is still a good option for students who wish to save tuitions 

 

Several Supreme Court decisions have said that art containing explicit sexual images is not necessarily pornographic.

위 문장을 

 

아래처럼

The several supreme court decisions ruling art containing explicit sexual images is not necessarily pornographic are concerning parents of children at public school as these exposures are not appropriate for young children.
